Waterproofing and tanking
basements and cellars

Preparation

Prior to application of our cellar waterproofing system, any existing paint, plaster or render must be removed to expose original brickwork or blockwork etc.

Soft or loose pointing should be raked out and replaced with a mortar consisting 1 part AquaStop to 1 part sand (sharp or soft). Thoroughly wet the repair area before filling.

Repaired areas can be coated with AquaStop after 24 hours, but large areas of new brickwork, poured concrete or cement renders should be allowed to cure for 3 days.

Any surface salts must be removed from the substrate by vigorous stiff brushing or, if necessary, mechanical abrasive grit blasting

Coves and Fillets

Should be installed where the wall meets the floor. Fillets should be constructed as follows:

  • Apply to the area at the floor/wall joint, a slurry coat of AquaStop (15cm in each direction from the joint).
  • Prepare a mortar made up of AquaStop consisting of 1 part AquaStop and 1 part sharp sand to produce a dry mix that will “ball-up” when formed like a snowball in the hand, and apply into the angle.
  • Smooth off using a coving trowel or similar shaped object (see Sketch 1).

If a cove is not practical, a saw cut can be made as shown in Sketch 2.

AquaStop should be allowed to flow into the saw cut in sufficient quantity to ensure that it has been filled on completion of the work. Alternatively, the saw cut can be filled as described for the coving material.

Tanking with AquaStop

Please study our technical data sheet before commencing work.

To tank with AquaStop:

  • Apply AquaStop as a slurry at a nominal rate of 1.25 kg/m²/coat.
  • The second coat may be applied as soon as the first becomes 'touch dry and should be applied at right angles to the first coat to ensure complete coverage is achieved. In all cases the second coat must be applied within 24 hours of the first.
  • Allow at least 3 days to cure before applying subsequent finishes.

Important: Please consult technical data sheet before applying any finishes.
