Why waterproof your walls, balconies, roofs and basements?

The presence of water within the fabric of the building can cause a variety of problems.

Causes of damp

Rising Damp

Rising damp at the base of the wall maybe caused by one, or a combination of the following:

  • No pre-existing damproof course – old stone structures
  • The original damproof course has failed – Victorian damproof courses were often made of slate which may have cracked.
  • The damproof course is being bridged – this can occur when an external structure, such as a concrete path or earth bank is installed, and is in contact with the wall both above and below the damproof course.

Solution

A damproof course can be installed into an existing wall by means of injection of a water repellent cream, Pam Cream to prevent further migration of moisture in then wall.

In addition, the wall can be internally treated above and below the damproof course with a waterproof slurry coat, of AquaStop to prevent moisture entering the house through the wall.

Water Penetration

Water penetration can occur when the local water table rises or other sources of ground water penetrate the walls or floor under pressure, causing dampness and sometimes “live” water to leak into the structure.

Balconies

Balconies can be a great feature on a building, improving the appearance of the property enabling the occupants to get outside to enjoy the view and relax. They can also be a nightmare if water penetrates through to the room below!

The choice of waterproof membrane will depend upon the construction of the balcony but, in all cases, the membrane should have a degree of flexibility to allow for thermal movement.

Concrete balconies can be coated with Impermax which is easily applied and can be overlade with a variety of finishes, or left as it is.

Waterproofing Walls

The presence of water in bricks and stone can be extremely damaging.

  • Water encourages the growth of moss and algae that leads to root formation within the walls which can cause serious structural problems.
  • Frost and ice forming at the surface, can cause spawling, and damages the face of bricks and stone.
